I often hear from people who have lived or traveled abroad say how good “we” (Americans) have it as if to imply, “You have nothing to complain about”. Well, sure we do but, yes, a majority of us are more fortunate than many.
As I read this article it reinforces why, here in the land of opportunity, we must be ever more vigilant in protecting the individual and defending freedom. While it may not be so obvious to some, even here there is so much collectivist mentality. It can be dangerous and should be kept at bay. While we all share this piece of dirt and we are all connected, there is a difference between respecting that common humanity that connects us and collectivism.
Collectivism is the infringement of personal liberty for the “greater good”. There can be no greater good when individual freedoms are usurped. Collectivism is the friend of the state and it is the enemy of the individual. Collectivism leads to homogenization and suppresses creativity, diversity, and innovation.
Collectivism is rooted in coercion, theft, and violence. There is a huge difference between collectivism and collaboration. The former is forced and the latter is voluntary. Collectivism is not charitable or altruistic.
Collectivism can look very noble.
Nurture the individual, freedom, creativity, diversity and starve the beast that is compelled to force others to comply with ideas based on the “greater good”.
Count your blessings but do not become complacent and turn a blind eye. Freedom is taken away piece by piece, diabolically. Don’t excuse the violations of personal freedom in your own backyard based on the hardships that others living abroad suffer. Let them be a lesson and a reminder to express and nurture freedom and individuality.
